Summer preludes the arrival of an abundance of medicinal plants for harvesting and preserving in preparation for winter.

Occasioned by the end of the harvest and the extraction of oil that we have just completed this year from the mountain of Pelion, we are pleased to present you our favorite St. John's Wort!

This yellow smiling sunny flower with its 5 petals and the intense burgundy-purple color of its oil (this red pigment is hypericin, one of its bioactive ingredients) when you press the flowers. The magic element of its leaves that if you hold them in the sun seem to have tiny dots (perforated) don't be fooled, it is a translucent layer of essential oils that gives it, its "epithet" "perforatum" which means perforated.

St. John’s wort is known primarily for its antidepressant properties but not only. It is believed that hypericin, a prominent component of balsam, increases the concentra-tion of melatonin formed from serotonin (Tilgner, 2009) and this contributes to its usefulness as a sedative and aid for sleep problems and for improving mood.

The magic of nature prepares again along with its sunny character make it particu-larly valuable during the winter months where natural light is significantly less. Its relationship with the sun is complex. It gives us the sun in our glass or on our skin, when we lack it, but some cautions are noted about its use such as the photosensitivi-ty it can cause on very fair skin especially in summer.

What is not well known about it, are detoxification and liver protection -it helps with liver stasis by 'cleansing' the liver and has also been shown to increase the catabo-lism of certain drugs, so it is best to consult a pharmacist or your pharmacist before using regularly or in conjunction with any other medication. DO NOT USE internal-ly during pregnancy or with birth control pills.

Its name "hypericum" indicates its use as a healing agent and ideal for wounds, burns, nerve pains, neuralgia, diaper rash (in oil form), muscle aches, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, also as ear drops and as a facial serum.

As an antispasmodic it helps to relax muscle spasms, including spasms in the lungs, colon, and uterus during menstruation.

It is also a diuretic and will increase your need to visit the restroom!

To maximize its relaxing effect, we love to combine it with other herbs such as oats, passionflower, hops strobile, valerian and for children with chamomile and rose pet-als. You will find it in many of our blends such as antistress, herpes, etc.

As an antiviral it seems to be useful in cases of herpes zoster by topical application and by internal ingestion. It also works as an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and soothes discomfort during the illness at the same time helping against the infection (McIntyre, 1996).

Crucial for making quality oil is the extraction of the fresh plant and using only the flowers and buds in olive oil, which is the extraction method we use to make our own St. John’s wort oil, collecting local hypericum flowers from Mount Pe-lion as a result a deep reddish ruby color.

This year's oil is ready, and we present it to you either on its own, or in the mus-cle pain oil, in the hypericum and arnica balm. Additionally, we can also use it as a dried herb on its own or in the anti-stress blend suggested for stressful situ-ations and can be consumed throughout the day.

Be sure to add it to your first aid kit for emergencies!
