Gardenias are highly aromatic creamy-white summer flowers that grow in solitary or in small clusters. They have dark green and glossy leaves with a leathery texture and prominent veins. Native to China where they have been cultivated for thousands of years, Gardenias are fairly adaptable shrubs tolerant of sun or semi-shade, and do best in a well-drained, humus-rich soil. Due to its sweet and rich fragrance, the Gardenia is also referred to as the White Angel.
