Description

Unlike terrestrial plants, spirulina has no hard cellulose cell wall so is easily digested. It has a high protein content, approximately 65%, and contains all of the essential amino acids (those the human body cannot produce so must acquire through diet). Protein contributes to a growth in, and maintenance of, muscle mass. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.

Spirulina features antioxidant properties, being high in vitamin E. When the body uses oxygen in natural metabolic processes to produce energy, damaging by-products are made. These are called reactive oxygen species (ROS) and are highly reactive molecules with an uneven number of electrons, which bind to healthy cells removing one of their electrons and creating damaging free radicals. These free radicals are very reactive and will bind to the nearest molecule, taking an electron and producing another unstable free radical, causing a destructive chain reaction within the cell. This free radical damage is known as oxidative stress". Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress - it protects DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage.

Spirulina is also high in calcium, magnesium and iron. Calcium plays a part in many functions of the body, including contributing to normal muscle function, transmission of information via nervous system, and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. Magnesium contributes to maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function, metabolism, and reducing tiredness and fatigue. Iron contributes to normal transport of oxygen around the body
